Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem spans more than 20 million contiguous acres across Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. It is widely considered the largest nearly intact temperate ecosystem remaining in the Northern Hemisphere. It anchors Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park, enveloped by five national forests and pristine wilderness areas. Read more on our dedicated Mission and Vision page.

High-speed highways bisect centuries-old animal migration corridors. By engineering overpasses, underpasses, and high directional fencing, we channel elk, deer, pronghorn, and grizzly bears safely across roadways. Proven field projects demonstrate a drop in animal-vehicle collisions of 85% to 92%. Learn more in our Madison Valley crossing field report.

Enacted under federal law in 2001, the Roadless Rule protects roughly 58.5 million acres of inventoried roadless national forest lands nationwide from commercial timber cutting and industrial road building. In Greater Yellowstone, it protects over 10 million acres across the Custer Gallatin and Bridger Teton national forests. Read our in-depth Roadless Rule defense article.

We collaborate with more than 49 Native American tribes who hold current and ancestral ties to Greater Yellowstone. Our collaborative priorities center on returning genetically pure Yellowstone bison to sovereign tribal ranges, honoring Indigenous treaty rights, and advocating for co-stewardship frameworks. Read about this in our tribal bison repatriation report.

The headwaters of Greater Yellowstone provide pristine clean drinking water to millions of downstream people and support multi-million dollar blue-ribbon fisheries. We actively combat nutrient pollution, toxic algal blooms, and reckless private bank armoring to preserve cold, oxygen-saturated water for native cutthroat trout.
